April 10, 2018 - Week 2
Preliminary Design Idea:
(Filtration Bottle) Inside a water bottle:
(1 Liter Water Bottle because the amount of water need to be enough until the next amount of water is filtered)
- Layers of Charcoal Powder - to filter out organic matters and metal (colored solutions)
- Why? Experimentally proven that it can remove coloring from water
- Each layers of charcoal will not be too thick because it takes the most amount of time to filter
- Layers of T-shirts - to capture the bacteria (micron sized beads) and remove them from water
- Why? It is a tightly woven cloth with tiny holes which can prevent the beads from going through, but still big enough for water to pass through
- Layers of Printed Papers - to further filter out the copper solutions (colored solutions)
- Why? It is thick and absorbent which will be able to absorb the metal components, yet, thin enough for clean water to go through
The clean water that is filtered from the filtered bottle will go into another water bottle so that it will only contain clean drinkable water.
Costs (Prices in USD): [If Brought in Store]
- Plastic Water Bottles ($2.38)
- T-shirts ($1.89)
- Activated Charcoal Powder ($15.73)
- Printed Paper ($9.99)
Summary:
This week we decided upon a preliminary design including the different materials that we are going to use. We have successfully decided on the three different materials: charcoal, t-shirt, and printed paper. The charcoal will filter the colored solution, the t-shirt will filter out the micron sized beads, and the printed papers will further filter out the colored solution.
